Hi, I’m Jimmy Moody. I am a U.S. fencing national team member, 2016 Olympic hopeful for Rio, and a TrueSport athlete.
Today, I’d like to talk to you about goal setting, and I have three things I’d like you to know. First, successful athletes use roadmaps and plans when making their goals. Second, goals should be written down, evaluated constantly, and changed if necessary. Third, goals shouldn’t be too easy. Make sure that they’re challenging and you push yourself.
The U.S. men’s fencing team set out with a long-term goal of achieving the first ever world number one rank. In order to do this, we had to set a series of short-term goals. That allowed us to train with focus and determination and stay on point. In order to set these goals, we had to write them down as a team and agree to them. We trusted them, we evaluated them constantly, and changed them when necessary.
My personal long-term goal is to earn a spot at the 2016 Olympic games in Rio. In order to achieve this long-term goal, I’ve set up several short-term goals to make sure I’m heading in a good direction. These include making the U.S. world team in the years leading up and the national team. Even things as short-term as my daily workouts. Making sure that they’re focused, productive, and always helping me achieve my long-term goal of competing in the Olympics in Rio.
TrueSport athletes know that their goal setting is crucial to achieving peak performance. It helps keep us focused, productive, and disciplined. So join me today in being a TrueSport athlete and set some goals.
